Radio & the Radiophonic
“Radio” today describes an idea as much as any particular communications technology. It has been almost one hundred years since the first wireless broadcasts for entertainment, and radio seems livelier than ever: from AM, to FM, to HAM, to satellite, with internet streaming, apps and podcasts, this sound medium knows no bounds. So, what is radio today? And how has this technology sustained so much experimentation and reinvention? This program reflects on the history of this particular technology, and looks to the future of radio and sound as a medium for artists, documentarians, musicians, educators and scientists.
Through conversation, installations, and live radio broadcasts, we will explore how the
traditions of radio inform new sound transmissions.
