Conductive Ink and Instruments

Kate Stone believes the future will look more like the past than the present – that old fashioned user interfaces, such as paper and ink, can become a new portal to our digital world. Her presentations shows how she added paper thin DJ decks into QBert’s album cover, how the cover of a paper notebook can become a MIDI keyboard, and how she created a fifty foot wall of music in a street at SXSW for passers by to jam on. Using printed conductive inks and low cost electronics, many of the beautiful things we have been told are dead – print media, physical music, books – can be brought back to life by giving them a digital soul. This is achieved not with new technology, but by combining old technologies with a software update.
