Musician and writer Claire L. Evans presentsThe Future is Unmanned, a condensed feminist history of the internet, tracing the lineage of women in direct conversation with technology, beginning with the human computers of the 19th century, passing through early computer programming pioneers before arriving at the 1990s: the decade when the personal computing revolution converged with the emergence of the internet, igniting a transformative shift in our relationship to technology—and to each other—that would reshape the modern world and give birth to the great lost wave of digital feminism: the cyberfeminists. The cyberfeminists made video games, hypertext novels, virtual reality projects, created non-narrative art pieces on websites and CD-ROMs, and wrote widely before disappearing along with the bursting of the dot-com bubble. InThe Future is Unmanned, Evans shares their story. She is currently working on a book of the same name for Penguin Random House.
