Virtual Reality can be thought of in plenty of ways. Jaron Lanier talks about his favorite: to think of people turning into avatars who act not only as creatures, but also as ultra-empowered musical instruments that improvise every level of a virtual world, as if the whole of reality is music. Isn’t it anyway? But people will be able to play reality better in VR than ever before. Music has always guided science and technology, even more than weapons. Musical bows came before hunting bow, bells before canons. Today, music is teaching us how to move and think within the spectacular and delicious new technologies we’re inventing. Music is the antidote to digital creepiness.
