Virginia Tech’s Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) brings together artists, designers, engineers, and scientists to create entirely new ways of interacting with the world around us. In this presentation, you will see and hear where the cutting edge of technology, from on-body sensing to massive immersive environments, is taking our senses as we enter the age of human-centered smart environments. The flagship of the institute is a four story “Cube” with 24 motion capture cameras and 150 speakers to enable anyone to walk through the FutureHaus, experience what it is like to be in a tornado, listen to what it sounds like to be on the football field during a college game, or explore “Big Data” in entirely new ways. Artists create sculptures to visualize parallel computing and create environments to experience the coastal estuaries of North Carolina without getting sandy. ICAT’s scientists study the emotional changes as we walk through immersive environments exploring the question, “How close can we really get to the Holodeck?”
