As a medium, recorded music functions closely to how it did over a century ago: press play and hear a fixed version of a composition. While there have been many evolutions in fidelity and digital reproduction of the years, the limitations of creating a single “master” are now being rethought.
This workshop focuses on production techniques designed for native digital environments, leveraging this potential from the composition all the way to multichannel playback systems. We demonstrate, using Ableton Live, how to expand a session to contain variable patterns for chord progressions and rhythms, flexible synthesis parameters that respond to interactivity, and multi-channel routing to Max for 3D audio processing and spatialization. An explanation of the various 3D panning functions is given to provide an understanding of the benefits of each. Finally, a walkthrough of how to create trajectories to move the individual multichannel sources in space will culminate in creating an immersive, living arrangement.
Laptop and basic proficiency in Ableton is required.
Please install Ableton Live, Max for Live, Max/MSP before you arrive.
