Arthur Russell's Instrumentals Directed by Peter Gordon

Foom presents one of Arthur Russell’s most important works: Instrumentals. Inspired by the nature photography of Yuko Nonomura, it was only ever performed five times during Arthur Russell’s life. 2015 saw the piece performed in Europe for the first time, with two sold-out London shows, a sold-out show in Cologne, and performances in Oslo, Helsinki, Dublin, Liverpool, Paris, and Barcelona. Instrumentals premiered in Berkeley, California in January 1975. As a composition, it continued to evolve and change as Russell and his ensemble performed it four more times in New York City over the next four years. Arthur Russell and Peter Gordon met in New York and became fast friends and frequent collaborators, working together on arrangements and notation of the nascent Instrumentals, with many parts of the original score in Gordon’s handwriting. Pitchfork described a 1975 recording of Arthur Russell’s Instrumentals as “a masterpiece…up there with World Of Echo as Arthur Russell’s greatest achievement.”
