Dave Tompkins

Dave Tompkins has contributed to the New Yorker, Grantland (RIP), Paris Review, NPR and The Wire. He recently documented a submarine journey into sewage for Slate. Tompkins' first book, How to Wreck a Nice Beach, is a history of the vocoder, from World War II to hip hop and electronic music. He has presented at Jan van Eyck (Netherlands), Salon Des Amateurs (Dusseldorf), Unsound (Krakow), RBMA (Moscow), Moogfest 2014, and the NSA National Cryptology Symposium, among others. Tompkins is currently writing a natural history of Miami Bass, exploring the psyche of sustained decay through U-boat attacks, coral memory, speaker walls and Gucci Crew.
