David Katz

Born in San Francisco but a longtime resident of London, David Katz is author of People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry; Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae; and Caribbean Lives: Jimmy Cliff. He contributed to The Rough Guide to Reggae, A Tapestry of Jamaica, Keep on Running: The Story of Island Records, International Reggae and Reggae From Yard. Katz’s writing and photographs have appeared in Newsweek, Mojo, the Guardian, Riddim, Wax Poetics, and Caribbean Beat, and he annotated over one hundred album retrospectives. Katz has co-hosted radio programs, released original records, and contributed to documentaries such as Dub Echoes, Dub Stories and Pioneers: Lee Perry. His Dub Me Always vinyl nights are regular features of London’s nightlife, and he has performed in New York, Belgium, Brazil and Japan. He has also chaired panel discussions with musicians at numerous European reggae festivals, and lectured in Jamaica, Poland, and Brazil.
