DJ Harvey
He might’ve cut his teeth drumming in a punk band called Ersatz, but there’s nothing fake about the soul of London-born DJ Harvey’s spinning. His mixes reach back into the hallowed halls of dance music’s past, such as the Paradise Garage, seamlessly yet funkily incorporating house, techno, garage, disco, rock, and whatever else he can stuff into his crates. One can still hear the influence of the fascination with hip-hop that helped him hone his percussive cutting style in the 1980s. In 1991, he DJed full time at the Gardening Club in London, then moved to the city’s hallowed Ministry of Sound. During the 90s he crafted a series of some of the decade’s most compelling mixes, rinsing New Labour on dancefloor after dancefloor. Harvey has DJed with legends from Larry Levan to James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. In 2014 he released the acclaimed LP Wildest Dreams, and received an award at the DJ Awards at Ibiza for his contributions to electronic music.
