Grimes

Since her critically acclaimed third album, Visions, was released, the Canadian electronic musician and producer Claire Boucher (a.k.a. Grimes) has toured the world and become an international phenomenon. She's headlined festivals, performed on late night television programs such as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Later With Jools Holland, and has graced the cover of countless music and fashion magazines. During this time she wrote, produced, and performed hundreds of songs while teaching herself new instruments, opening up her sound palette to incorporate beloved childhood influences like the songs of Dolly Parton, Bollywood film soundtracks, and 90’s industrial rock.
In 2014, Grimes relocated to Los Angeles where she set up a home studio and began recording her third album, Art Angels. Continuing to evolve as a producer, she decided to stick to live instrumentation as much as possible. When asked how the new album differs from previous work, Boucher says that she “used a completely different sound palette than before. I think of Visions as a black and white painting and this is an album where I used colors.”
She also developed a new and unique creative process. Boucher likens it to method acting: “I delved deeply into my alter egos and became a lot less shy as a vocalist and a writer.” She explains that “a huge part of this album was writing from other perspectives and trying to really embody them. I just let my imagination go crazy.” One thing remained the same, she continued her tradition of writing, producing, engineering, performing her albums and directing her music videos as a solo endeavor.
The result is a more lyrically and sonically developed album. Spanning over 14 tracks, Art Angels is a sprawling, arresting work that’s as uncompromising as it is inviting.
