Jaron Lanier

One of the world’s leading technology writers, Lanier was born to a Viennese mother who survived concentration camps and a father whose family escaped pogroms in the Ukraine. Lanier was accepted into New Mexico State University at age 13, and spent several years attempting to build a geodesic dome. In the 1980s, he worked for Atari and founded VPL research to develop virtual reality patents. As a musician, Lanier plays classical piano and harnesses many Asian instruments, and his band Chromatophoria ushered Virtual Reality onto the concert stage. In his philosophical works, Lanier has critiqued both doomsaying and utopian characterizations of the power of the Internet and modern computer technology. Joe Nocera of the New York Times named Lanier’s book Who Owns the Future? the most important book of 2013.
