Jerrilynn Patton, known as Jlin, is a steel mill worker and acclaimed electronic musician from Gary, Indiana. Patton began producing music in 2008. Her track "Erotic Heat" was featured on Planet Mu’s 2011 footwork compilation Bangs and Works Vol. 2. Later, the song accompanied a Rick Owens fashion show in 2014. Growing up, Patton’s parents exposed her to a variety of great musicians, and her favorite artists included Anita Baker, Sade, and Rachelle Ferrell. She also listened to footwork at a young age. At the dawn of her life as a musician in 2008, Patton played a song of hers for her mother that sampled Teena Marie’s "Portuguese Love". Her mother's response prompted Patton to light out from footwork’s emphasis on samples in search of her own sound. The result was her critically lauded 2015 debut album Dark Energy.
