Larry Gus

Multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer Panagiotis Melidis, born in Veria, Imathia, Greece, started to write music as Larry Gus (“λάρυγγας” is greek for larynx) in 2006. Combining sample-based ethics and crystal clear psychedelic pop melodies into an infinitely dense amount of layers and polyrhythms, he also became known for energetic and chaotic live performances, which involve singing and playing various percussion over samplers with a Sufi-esque ritual intensity. His most recent album Years Not Living (DFA, 2013), was directly inspired by Georges Perec’s multi-faceted 1978 book Life: A User’s Manual, a notable Oulipo work. Before that, he released Silent Congas (DFA, 2012), a free download mini-album with outtakes from the YNL sessions. Larry Gus has remixed many artists (Cut Copy, Sandro Perri, Eric Copeland, YACHT, Sinkane, Little Boots) and has performed extensively around the world (he most notably toured as opener for Cut Copy in North America). He currently lives and works in Milan, Italy, and his style continues to expand around various primitive aesthetics of groove based music, along with an obsession for process/constraint based songwriting.
