Steven A. Cummer (Duke University)

Steven A. Cummer is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and spent two years at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center before joining Duke. Professor Cummer’s research is broadly focused on understanding and exploiting the interaction of different kinds of waves—including radio, sound, and light waves—with complex materials and structures. He and his group have developed many different kinds of artificial materials to control sound and create new devices, such as acoustic holograms. They were also the first to derive the concept of transformation acoustics, a technique that uses artificial materials to control sound waves in ways previously thought not possible. This work opened the door to possible applications that include acoustic cloaking, or hiding objects from sound waves.
