Tim Hecker

When ambient just doesn’t go hard enough on the ambience, fear not. There is always Tim Hecker’s drone. Early in his career, he was known as Jetone and oriented toward techno. But in the mid-2000s Hecker pioneered drone across several albums, such as 2006’s critically acclaimed Harmony in Ultraviolet. Migrating across vistas of distorted, digitally processed pipe organs with Ben Frost resulted in the similarly lauded LP The Ravedeath, 1972, released in 2011. Hecker has also collaborated with musicians such as Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), lectured in the burgeoning academic field of Sound Studies, and worked with visual artists such as Stan Douglas and Charles Stankievech. Recent projects include Ephemera, for which Hecker composes drone and Berlin-based Geza Schoen composes a scent for the drone.
