AUDINT

Toby Heys is a Digital Technologies Research Fellow at MIRIAD, Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK and an affiliate researcher at Hexagram in Montreal, Canada. He works within the AUDINT research cell (audint.net) and has produced multi-sensory installations and performances for the TATE Britain (London), Art in General (New York), Academy of Arts, Berlin, Mutek (Montreal), and the Unsound Festival (Krakow); records (Martial Hauntology) and cassettes (Magdalena Parker archive material) for AUDINT Records and Reel Torque; books such as the upcoming Unsound:Undead anthology; and films, such as Delusions of the Living Dead and Ghostcode that are being screened in Europe, North America and Asia.

Born in Glasgow, Kode9, aka Steve Goodman, started deejaying at age 16. Having spent the halcyon 90s deejaying an eclectic mix of hip hop, reggae, and house while immersing himself in jungle and drum’n’bass, it is fitting that Kode9 became a fixture of the rise of grime in the 2000s. After his track “Ping” appeared on the Rephlex record’s second Grime compilation in 2004, Kode9 founded Hyperdub records, a vital laboratory for dubstep. His first record on Hyperdub was Sine of the Dub, in collaboration with Daddy Gee. Following this was Memories of the Future and Black Sun (both featuring Spaceape), as well as 2015’s Nothing. On the academic tip, Kode9 has spent much time breaking bread with the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit of the University of Warwick, where he earned his PhD in Philosophy. In 2009, Kode9 published his book, Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect, and the Ecology of Fear.
